What is an opening scene?

What is an opening scene?

In the opening scene every film there is the title of the film to show the audience the name of the film. This is a traditional aspect for the opening scene of a film, a reason why it is done is to give the audience an indication of the tone of the film. This is usually seen in the font, sound and transitions used from the title. For example in "Children of Men" they used the sound from the aftermath of the explosion which made it seem like the film will be very violent. Also the font is very uniform and regular which could mean that the film is serious and will have a deeper meaning. This can be seen in these opening to this film:

It also introduces the main characters of the film as well as the supporting characters, also it briefly introduces the story or plot of the film. The opening scene from Transformers introduces on the the main characters and it raises some questions about the film that makes you want to keep on watching the film. This therefore follows the traditional conventions of an opening scene because it shows the producers of the film, the main credits and introduces some of, if not all, the main characters involved in the film. An example of a character being introduced is Optimus Prime and he is introduced with a voiceover

The titles of the film can provide interest for the audience because they can see what actors are in the film and this can draw their interest. The opening scene to Deadpool is a great example because it raises questions about the characters and production staff in the film. It also follows traditional coventions of an opening scene because it introduces the main character, Deadpool in the car (still image), gives the producers own introduction and the opening credits for the film.
